When Taylor Swift descended upon Super Bowl weekend, she instantly declared one thing: the Penny Lane coat is back.
On Feb. 8, the “Cruel Summer” singer, 35, rocked a chic shearling coat that cinema fans could arguably agree was a nod to Almost Famous, a 2000 rom-com starring Kate Hudson as a ‘70s band groupie named Penny Lane, whose coat in the film became so famous that she became the unofficial namesake for the style.
While appearing on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Feb. 25, Hudson, 45, had nothing but kind words to say about Swift’s nod to the movie, which earned Hudson her first Golden Globe in 2001.
“This was very exciting, She wore the Penny Lane coat,” said the actress, who also pointed out that there were more Easter eggs referenced with Swift’s look than meets the eye.

Hudson and host Jimmy Fallon went on to discuss some of the potential clues that nodded to 13, Swift’s lucky number. First, Almost Famous was released on Sept. 13, 2000, while The Beatles’ hit song, “Penny Lane,” was released in the U.S. on Feb. 13, 1967.
“It’s getting kind of weird,” Hudson joked.
While not confirmed, it makes total sense that Swift would’ve wanted to bring some good fortune to the match with a superstitiously styled outfit. Although, we think she’s likely just a fan of the winter staple, which has also been seen on the likes of Bella Hadid and Sydney Sweeney.

Before the Super Bowl in New Orleans, Swift attended the Chiefs vs. Texans game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. on Dec. 21, decked out in a red version of the outerwear designed by Charlotte Simone, which put a bohemian twist on her usually preppy game-day style.
The Penny Lane coat was first popularized in the 1970s but then had a resurgence in the early aughts thanks to Hudson’s look, which was created by costume designer Betsy Heimann.
“The looks she created for Almost Famous were perfectly of the era,” Hudson told Vogue in 2015.
“Betsy worked with Neil Young and travelled a lot in the rock world during that time, so the looks were very authentic to her experience. It’s no surprise that they have maintained that kind of longevity. I believe that Penny Lane’s signature coat, which Betsy designed, is actually on exhibit at a museum, and I think that shows how that character’s look really resonated with people. I feel very lucky to have been able to do that film.”

And in an interview with PEOPLE in 2024, Hudson reflected on how starring in Almost Famous changed her life.
“I think [he] connected with the fact that I loved music and saw that in me, but he really blew the lid open for so much music for me. I was 19, and he just filled me with all this great music that I’d never heard,” Hudson said. “That was the beginning of everything for me.”
