Scarlett Johansson Reveals The One Selfie Rule That Some Fans Find ‘Offensive’

Scarlett Johansson has a simple but firm rule about taking pictures with fans, and she expects people to respect it.
Now, if you ever run into a Hollywood A-lister like Johansson, it’s natural to want a quick photo to remember the moment. After all, how often do you get the chance to meet a major movie star in real life?

But there’s definitely a right time and place for these moments. For example, if you spot your favorite actor in a restaurant mid-bite, maybe hold off on that selfie request. And if they’re in the bathroom? Definitely not the time.

Johansson has a personal rule about selfies with fans, and while it makes sense to her, it doesn’t always sit well with everyone. In fact, some fans have even said they feel ‘offended’ by it.

Talking about the challenges of fame, the Marriage Story actress shared her thoughts with InStyle“The thing about being a public figure is that the idea of being recognizable and celebrated feels fun, but then you can never stuff it back in the bottle.”

“The reality of it is, there’s a massive loss to that, you know?”

Because of this, Johansson isn’t always up for taking photos with fans, and she tends to save those interactions for formal events or public appearances. If she’s just out running errands, like grabbing groceries or making a quick stop at Bed Bath & Beyond on a Saturday afternoon, she prefers to keep her privacy.

Explaining her stance, she said: “It really offends a lot of people. It doesn’t mean I’m not appreciative, of course, that people are fans, or happy to see me.”

“But I always say to people, ‘I’m not working.’ [And that means] I don’t want to be identified as being in this time and place with you. I’m doing my own thing.”

Honestly, that seems totally reasonable.

Johansson’s comments come shortly after she and her husband, Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost, made headlines for an unexpected reason back in December.

Jost, who co-hosts SNL’s famous ‘Weekend Update’ segment alongside Michael Che, is known for his sharp sense of humor. He and Che regularly take playful jabs at each other, swapping jokes that sometimes land one of them in the hot seat.

This time, however, it was Johansson who unexpectedly became the target of one of Jost’s jokes during the live show.

She was in the audience when he dropped a particularly bold punchline, and her reaction—captured on camera—quickly went viral.

“I want to dedicate this next joke to my boo, Scarlett Johansson,” Jost quipped at the time.

Taking the joke even further, he made a cheeky comment about their married life, especially after Johansson gave birth to their son, Cosmo, in 2021.

He added: “Costco has removed the roast beef sandwich from its menu, but I ain’t tripping. I be eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.”

The camera immediately cut to Johansson, who was seen mouthing “Oh my god” in response to the unexpected joke.

The moment quickly made waves online, with fans loving her unfiltered reaction.
